Rare Winter Storm Hits US Gulf Coast: Record Snowfall and Dangerous Cold Claim Lives

The Gulf Coast is currently experiencing a rare and historic winter storm that has brought dangerously cold temperatures and significant snowfall to areas typically known for their warm climate. This storm, which began impacting the region on January 20, 2025, has resulted in at least 10 fatalities attributed to hypothermia, vehicle accidents on icy roads, and a house fire linked to heating efforts during the extreme cold.

This winter storm is not only a meteorological anomaly but also a stark reminder of the changing climate patterns affecting even the warmest regions of the United States

As of Jan 22, storm has shattered snowfall records across multiple states. Notably, New Orleans recorded 20.3 cm (8 inches) of snow, marking its first significant snowfall in 15 years and surpassing previous records set in 1963. Pensacola, Florida, also saw 12.7 cm (5 inches) of snow, breaking century-old records from the 1895 Gulf Storm.

The storm’s impact extends from Texas to the southeastern U.S., with states like Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia declaring states of emergency. Major highways have been closed due to hazardous conditions, including a stretch of Interstate 10 in Florida’s western Panhandle.

The storm has led to widespread travel disruptions, with nearly 2,000 flights canceled and many more delayed as airports brace for hazardous weather conditions. Roads have become treacherous due to icy conditions and black ice.

ocal governments have mobilized emergency services to address power outages and assist stranded motorists. Many schools and businesses were forced to close as safety measures were implemented across the affected regions.
