U.S. Notifies UN of Withdrawal from Paris Climate Agreement, Reigniting Climate Policy Debate

The United Nations has confirmed that the United States has formally notified its withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, a significant move that aligns with President Donald Trump’s campaign promise.

This notification was received on January 27, 2025, and according to Article 28 of the Paris Agreement, the withdrawal will take effect one year later, on January 27, 2026.

This marks a repeated action by Trump, who initially withdrew the U.S. from the agreement during his first term in November 2020. Although President Joe Biden re-entered the accord shortly after taking office in February 2021, Trump’s recent executive order reinstates the U.S. exit from the landmark climate pact aimed at limiting global temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015 by nearly every nation, is crucial for global efforts to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The U.S. typically contributes about 22% of the budget for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which manages the Paris Agreement. Following this withdrawal, billionaire Michael Bloomberg has pledged financial support to help fill the funding gap left by the U.S. exit.

This situation highlights ongoing tensions between national policies and international climate commitments as global temperatures continue to rise, surpassing critical thresholds in recent years.
