PM Shehbaz Condemns India’s Attempt to Exploit Indus Waters Treaty, Urges Genuine Peace Dialogue

May 29, 2025: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned India’s attempts to weaponize the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), warning that such threats to Pakistan’s water lifeline would never materialize.

Speaking at the second Trilateral Summit in Lachin, Azerbaijan, on Wednesday, the premier underscored that the treaty was vital for Pakistan’s 240 million people, who depend on it for agriculture, drinking water, and other essential needs.

“It is most unfortunate that India tried to threaten to stop the flow of water into Pakistan. This is not possible, this is never possible and will not be possible, Insha’Allah,” he asserted, adding that Pakistan is making necessary arrangements to prevent any such move.

Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace, the prime minister said the country is ready to engage in comprehensive dialogue with India — provided New Delhi demonstrates sincerity and cooperation.

He emphasized the importance of resolving the Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Referring to India’s recent aggression, the prime minister stated that Pakistan emerged victorious with the help of Almighty Allah, the support of its people, friendly nations, and the resolute response of its armed forces. In his nationally televised speech, he lauded Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his fearless and professional leadership during the standoff.

PM Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted Pakistan’s heavy sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, with over 90,000 lives lost and $150 billion in economic damage. He said Pakistan remains open to dialogue with India on counter terrorism — again, only if met with genuine intent.

“Pakistan wants peace, not war. But peace requires dialogue — honest, meaningful dialogue,” he said, adding that issues such as trade could also be discussed if India shows willingness to engage constructively.

The prime minister concluded by criticizing India’s failure to provide credible evidence in the recent Pahalgam incident and their rejection of Pakistan’s offer for a neutral and transparent investigation by an international body.
