Simon Stiell, the United Nations climate chief, has issued a stark warning that the global community must intensify efforts to combat climate change ahead of the crucial COP30 summit.
Simon Stiell, spoke on June 26, 2025, delivering a written statement on the final day of the UN June Climate Meetings held in Bonn, Germany.
Speaking just weeks before the conference, Stiell emphasized that while progress has been made, there is still “a lot more to do” to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
“We need to go further, faster and fairer,” Stiell said, underscoring the urgency of accelerating emission reductions, expanding climate finance, and ensuring equitable solutions that support vulnerable populations and developing nations.
COP30, set to convene later this year, will be a defining moment for countries to update their climate commitments and strengthen global cooperation. Experts warn that without significant increases in ambition and action, the world risks surpassing the critical 1.5°C warming threshold, leading to severe environmental and social impacts.
Stiell called on governments, businesses, and civil society to unite in delivering bold policies and investments that drive a just transition to a low-carbon future. “The time to act is now,” he stressed. “Delays will only make the challenge harder and more costly.”
As the countdown to COP30 continues, the international community faces mounting pressure to turn words into meaningful action to safeguard the planet for future generations.
