Leading Hydrogen Producer Thyssenkrupp Nucera to Abandon U.S. Projects Amid Trump Administration Policy Shifts

A leading global hydrogen producer, Thyssenkrupp Nucera, headquartered in Germany, has announced plans to abandon some of its U.S. hydrogen projects due to policy changes under President Donald Trump’s administration.

The company’s CEO, Werner Ponikwar, stated on August 13, 2025, that the company is reassessing the viability of its U.S. projects in light of the Trump administration’s elimination of tax credits for low-carbon and renewable energy sources, as well as changes to tax and spending rules.

These policy shifts have curtailed demand for green hydrogen and made it more difficult to develop clean energy projects, particularly because renewable energy tax credits will phase out after 2026 if projects have not started construction by then.

Thyssenkrupp is canceling projects considered no longer feasible under the new framework but may sustain those that can begin construction before the end of 2027, following a revised deadline that could keep some projects alive.

The administration’s tougher rules on tax credits and subsidies are seen as a significant impediment to the clean hydrogen sector’s growth in the U.S., coinciding with a broader policy pivot favoring fossil fuels over renewable energy.

The hydrogen market still holds potential, but companies like Thyssenkrupp are being forced to be more cautious and patient due to the policy environment.
