Torrential Monsoon Rains Trigger Deadly Floods and Landslides in Pakistan, Over 340 Killed

Since Thursday, torrential rains across Pakistan have caused severe flooding, rising waters, and landslides that have devastated entire villages.

These disasters have led to at least 344 deaths, with more than 150 people still missing, mostly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The heaviest impact has been in the Buner district, where around 208 people have died and 10 to 12 villages were partially buried.

The floods and landslides have swept away homes, trapped residents in rubble, and disrupted electricity and mobile communications, complicating rescue efforts.

About 2,000 rescue workers and numerous volunteers have been searching for survivors despite ongoing rain and challenging conditions.

The monsoon rains during this season have been unusually severe, with rainfall 50-60% higher than last year, intensifying the disaster.

Authorities warn that more heavy rains and potential landslides could continue into the coming days, urging vigilance and preparation. The recent floods are part of a broader monsoon season that has already claimed over 650 lives in Pakistan this year, with climate change contributing to increased rainfall and glacial melting, which exacerbates landslides and floods.
