Flood Surge of 300,000 Cusecs Hits Guddu Barrage

The flood surge carrying around 300,000 cusecs of water entered the Guddu Barrage on Thursday.

Authorities have evacuated more than 94,000 people from the riverine (katcha) areas for their safety as a precaution against potential flooding in low-lying settlements.

The situation remains critical, although the immediate threat of a “super flood” has been temporarily averted.

Sindh’s irrigation minister and officials are closely monitoring the inflows from swollen eastern rivers merging in the Indus River system, with predictions of possible flows reaching 650,000 to 700,000 cusecs at Guddu if current conditions persist.

Efforts are underway to manage water flows at upstream dams like Tarbela to reduce the burden downstream at Guddu.

Provincial departments and rescue teams have been put on high alert to respond promptly to changes in the flood situation.

Briefing the media at the Flood Emergency Control Room in Karachi, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Thursday said that although the threat of a “super flood” had been averted for now, the situation remained critical.

He confirmed that in the past 24 hours, 94,795 residents of katcha areas had been safely relocated.

“At present, there is no need for artificial cuts or breaches, but if conditions change, low-lying settlements could still be affected,” he cautioned.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah is personally overseeing flood preparations in the province, and measures such as deployment of rescue boats and evacuation of vulnerable populations are ongoing.

The flood threatens both human lives and livestock, with about 2.4 million animals at risk of being affected by rising waters. Additionally, the region faces potential damage to personal assets and properties due to flooding.
