Sindh Energy Department Probes Lightning Strikes

KARACHI: The Sindh Energy Department has initiated a probe into the devastating lightning strikes that hit Thar, seeking expert assistance from the Federal Institute of Science and Technology and NED University Karachi.

The investigation follows an incident that occurred one day earlier, in which 12 lightning strikes occurred in a day in Tharparkar district, Thar Desert, resulting in eight fatalities and the deaths of 100 cattle, according to private media reports.

As per press release, Provincial Energy Minister Syed Nasir Shah has expressed condolences and assured support to affected families. The department’s letter to the Federal Institute of Science and Technology requests a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the lightning strikes.

The investigation aims to identify the reasons behind the lightning strikes in Thar. It also seeks to develop strategies to mitigate the impact of such incidents. Furthermore, the department plans to launch awareness campaigns to educate people in Thar on lightning protection and precautionary measures.

This initiative aims to reduce further casualties and provide valuable insights into addressing this critical issue in Thar.
