India’s Landslides Death Toll Rises to 123 in Kerala

WAYANAD: At least 123 people have died in landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains in Kerala’s Wayanad district, with many more feared to be trapped. Rescue operations are ongoing, led by local authorities, The Guardian reported.

As per report, over 128 people have been injured, and 3,069 are in relief camps.

The Kerala government has announced two days of state mourning, and the central government has offered support, including an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.

Heavy rains continue to hamper rescue efforts, with a red alert issued for the region. The landslides have caused widespread damage and disruption, with many areas still inaccessible.

Report says the landslides have destroyed homes, roads, and bridges, leaving many without access to basic necessities. The Wayanad district has been severely affected, with the Meppadi region being one of the worst-hit areas.

The Kerala government has deployed medical teams and emergency responders to assist in the relief efforts. The central government has also sent a team to assess the damage and provide support. The National Highway Authority of India has reported damage to several national highways, disrupting traffic and communication.

The Kerala State Electricity Board has also reported power outages in several areas, adding to the challenges faced by the affected population.
