CM Sindh, WFP Strengthen Partnership on Climate Change

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and UN World Food Program (WFP) Country Director Ms Coco Ushiyama met on Wednesday to discuss strengthening their partnership in various areas.

According to official press release, the meeting held at the CM House, focused on WFP’s five-year Country Strategic Plan, which aims to address humanitarian and development challenges in Sindh. The Chief Minister acknowledged the long-standing partnership between the Sindh government and WFP, highlighting successful collaborations in post-disaster needs assessment and sustainable recovery frameworks.

The Chief Minister and WFP Country Director agreed to strengthen their collaboration in disaster preparedness, response, and mitigation efforts. They also discussed ways to enhance climate change adaptation measures in the province. Additionally, they talked about addressing acute malnutrition and stunting, as well as expanding the school meals program. Furthermore, they explored opportunities to expand food silos under WFP’s Country Strategic Plan.

The Chief Minister also mentioned the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), which provides nutrition, health, and social services to pregnant and breastfeeding women and their children. WFP’s support for the Adolescent Girls Nutrition Programme and wheat flour fortification initiative was also discussed.

Regarding Food System Strengthening, the Chief Minister emphasized the need to enhance wheat storage capacity in Sindh. WFP’s support for constructing strategic grain reserves through a Public Private Partnership was also highlighted.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on accessing resources from climate financing entities and supporting community resilience-building activities under the Sindh Coastal Resilience Project.
