Punjab govt approves province’s first climate change policy

The Punjab government has approved the province’s first climate change policy.

As reported, the Punjab government has decided to approve the province’s first Climate Change Resilient, Carbon Financing and Multi-Sectoral Policy on July 10, 2024.

A meeting regarding climate change policy was held under the chairmanship of Punjab Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb.

She said that projects worth three hundred billion have been kept under the annual development scheme in the policy, and regular funds have also been provided along with the timeline.

The provincial minister added that according to the decision, work will be done on a long-term and short-term basis for the elimination of environmental pollution, the policy has been made in mutual consultation with all government and private stakeholders.

Maryam Aurangzeb said that the implementation of the policy according to the decision will greatly help in controlling air pollution and smog.

Earlier in May, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the establishment of the Pakistan Climate Change Authority. The Supreme Court ordered the establishment of the Climate Change Authority, the Climate Change Act in Pakistan was made in 2017, now after 7 years, the climate change authority Climate Change Authority is being established, and the Supreme Court has also ordered the provision of funds for the Climate Change Authority.

The Prime Minister had said that Pakistan is among the countries that contribute the least to climate disaster but are most affected by climate change.

The Prime Minister said that there is a need to create a comprehensive and effective plan to deal with climate change, climate change is linked to agriculture, energy, water, infrastructure and many other sectors.
