Dense Fog Disrupts Travel Across Punjab

Dense fog has enveloped parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulting in the closure of several major motorways due to dangerously low visibility on Saturday, December 21, 2024.

Authorities have taken precautionary measures to ensure public safety, advising motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and prioritize daytime driving.

Motorway Closures:

  • M1: Closed from Burhan to Peshawar.
  • M2: Closed from Thokar Niaz Baig to Khanqah Dogran.
  • M3: Closed from Faizpur to Rajana.
  • M4: Closed between Shorkot and Gojra.
  • M11: Closed from Mehmood Booti to Sambial.

Motorway Police spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed emphasized the importance of using fog lights and maintaining safe distances between vehicles. He noted that these closures are common during winter when humidity and low temperatures create ideal conditions for dense fog.

The increasing frequency and intensity of fog events can be linked to climate change, which has altered weather patterns globally. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has reported rising humidity levels, contributing to the severity of fog in winter months. As temperatures drop, the combination of cold air and moisture leads to reduced visibility, posing risks for travelers.

Moreover, the phenomenon of smog, exacerbated by air pollution and climatic conditions, has been a growing concern in urban areas such as Lahore and Peshawar. Recent data indicates that air quality in these regions remains poor, highlighting the need for effective environmental policies to combat pollution and mitigate climate impacts.

As winter progresses, authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely and urge the public to stay informed about travel advisories.
