Nearly two weeks after flash floods ravaged the village of Dain in Ghizer district’s Ishkoman sub-district of Pakistan’s Gilgit Baltistan region, residents are still struggling to cope with the aftermath. The disaster, which occurred on August 14, 2025, forced over 100 households to take shelter in tents provided by philanthropic organizations, Climate Inn learnt.
According to local environment journalist Nadia Zartaj, who is reporting from the region for Climate Inn, children are among the most affected, having been out of school since the floods. The connecting bridge to the school was demolished, disconnecting children from their education.
The floods have also led to a drinking water crisis, with women bearing the brunt of the burden as they have to fetch water from far-flung areas. The destruction of washrooms in houses has further exacerbated the situation, with makeshift washrooms in tents creating issues for everyone, especially women.
The communication system in the area was also destroyed, leaving residents without access to vital services. Climate Inn has learned that the affected communities are in dire need of support to rebuild their lives.
The situation in Dain village highlights the vulnerability of communities in Gilgit-Baltistan to climate-related disasters. Efforts are needed to provide relief and support to affected residents, particularly women and children, to help them recover from this devastating event.
