CM Punjab Maryam Nawaz Launches China-Inspired Initiative to Tackle Lahore’s Pollution Crisis

In a move to combat the escalating air pollution in Lahore, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a new initiative inspired by successful practices from China.

The plan focuses on the installation of water sprinkling systems at 1,500 construction sites throughout the city, a measure designed to significantly reduce dust and debris that contribute to the region’s deteriorating air quality.

The Chief Minister has directed the Communication and Works Department and the Lahore Development Authority to begin the installation process immediately, with a particular emphasis on completing the setup at Qaddafi Stadium by January 15. This proactive approach aims to mitigate dust emissions during construction activities, which have been a major source of pollution in urban areas.

To ensure compliance, construction sites will be mandated to cover their areas with green cloth to minimize dust spread. The government has warned that non-compliance after February 10 will result in legal action against violators.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address Lahore’s severe air pollution crisis, which has reached alarming levels in recent years, leading to health emergencies and increased hospitalizations. The Chief Minister also proposed establishing a joint working group with China to enhance collaborative efforts against environmental pollution. This partnership aims to facilitate knowledge sharing and technology transfer in areas such as green urban planning and sustainable transport systems.

CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that China’s advancements in pollution control serve as a valuable model for Pakistan and other developing nations facing similar challenges. As part of this commitment, the provincial government had previously launched a comprehensive ten-year smog mitigation plan in November 2024, reflecting its dedication to improving air quality through innovative strategies.

With this new initiative, Lahore takes a significant step towards addressing its air quality issues, showcasing the government’s determination to create a healthier environment for its citizens.
