Denmark and SDPI Collaborate to Enhance Climate Action in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Danish Ambassador Jakob Linulf emphasized the collaborative efforts between Denmark and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) to foster a conducive environment for climate action in Pakistan.

During a policy dialogue on Jan 6, 2025, titled “Post COP Dialogue: Operationalization of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement,” he expressed Denmark’s pride in supporting Pakistan’s initiatives to attract foreign investments aimed at addressing climate change challenges.

Ambassador Linulf highlighted that effective climate change mitigation requires a supportive governmental framework in Pakistan. He pointed out that both nations are working together to enhance societal resilience against climate impacts, guided by discussions at international climate conferences and UN forums. He noted that future climate strategies would involve carbon emissions trading, which would facilitate funding for climate adaptation projects.

Moreover, he stressed individual responsibility in climate action, urging practices such as reducing waste, promoting tree planting, and adopting energy-efficient solutions. The ambassador also mentioned the importance of securing a long-term environment for foreign direct investment through carbon trading mechanisms.

Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director of SDPI, underscored the necessity for transparency and robust monitoring within carbon markets. He advocated for independent accreditation bodies and alignment with international frameworks like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Suleri also highlighted the potential of carbon credits from various initiatives to support adaptation funding.

Zulfiqar Younas from the Ministry of Climate Change announced plans for a customized carbon registry to be launched by February, which aims to facilitate transparent carbon credit trading and enhance Pakistan’s access to international carbon finance markets.

The dialogue also addressed the significance of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, with Ambassador Shafqat Kakakhel emphasizing the need for sustainable energy solutions like biomass, solar, and wind power.

The discussions reflect a commitment to leveraging outcomes from COP29 and enhancing collaboration between public and private sectors to achieve Pakistan’s climate goals.
