EU Pledges Rs350 Million Emergency Aid to Pakistan Flood Victims

The European Union (EU) has announced emergency aid worth nearly Rs350 million (approximately €1.05 million) to assist victims of the devastating flash floods in Pakistan.

These floods, caused by unusually heavy monsoon rains and the release of massive water from India, have claimed over 800 lives, displaced more than 35,000 people, and caused severe damage to infrastructure, homes, and farmland across multiple provinces including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir.

The EU aid package will be delivered through trusted humanitarian partner organizations and will focus on providing life-saving health services, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) support to help prevent disease outbreaks. Additionally, cash assistance will be provided to vulnerable families to help meet their basic needs during this critical time. The EU reiterated its solidarity with the people of Pakistan and extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this disaster.

The floods have caused widespread destruction, including the collapse of 238 bridges, submergence of 661 kilometers of road networks, destruction of 9,000 homes, and loss of over 6,000 livestock. The EU funding aims to address urgent humanitarian needs, supporting health services, essential relief items, clean water, temporary shelter, and psychological support for vulnerable groups such as women, children, and adolescent girls.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar received a call from the Vice President of the European Union, who expressed condolences and assurances of continued support in relief and rehabilitation efforts. The EU also emphasized the link between increased flood frequency and climate change, noting Pakistan is among the countries most affected by this crisis.

This aid builds on previous EU humanitarian support, highlighting their commitment to assisting Pakistan in coping with climate-related disasters and helping affected communities recover sustainably.
