Flood Alert: Rivers Jhelum, Kabul, Ravi, Chenab, and Indus Expected to Surge from Friday

Authorities have issued a warning for potential flooding as the rivers Jhelum, Kabul, Ravi, Chenab, and Indus are anticipated to swell significantly starting this Friday.

The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) on Thursday predicted medium to high flood in rivers Jhelum, Kabul, Ravi, Indus and Chenab catchments between Friday to Monday while medium to high flood (flash flooding) is also expected in hill torrents of D G Khan Division (Punjab) and nullahs of Zhob, Sibbi, Nasirabad and Kalat Divisions (Balochistan).

According to the latest reports from the Pakistan Meteorological Department, heavy monsoon rains are likely to cause these major rivers to run furious, posing a serious threat to nearby communities.

Meteorological officials predict that the increased water levels could lead to flooding in several regions, affecting both urban and rural areas.

“We urge residents along these rivers to remain vigilant and prepared for possible evacuations,” stated a spokesperson from the Pakistan Meteorological Department. “Our teams are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local authorities to ensure timely response and support.”

The anticipated surge in river levels is attributed to a combination of persistent monsoon rains and the melting of glaciers in the northern areas. The heavy downpours are expected to continue over the next few days, exacerbating the risk of flash floods and landslides in susceptible regions.

Emergency services and disaster management authorities have been put on high alert, with measures being taken to mitigate the impact of the impending floods. Local administrations are advised to activate their flood response plans, ensuring that resources and personnel are ready to assist affected communities. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of the residents,” the spokesperson added. “We are working around the clock to provide support and ensure that all necessary precautions are in place.”

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and follow the guidance of local authorities. Evacuation routes and emergency shelters are being prepared, and communities are urged to have emergency kits and supplies ready.

The potential flooding highlights the ongoing challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather events in the region. As Pakistan braces for the impact, the government and disaster management agencies continue to emphasize the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters.

The coming days will be critical as authorities and communities work together to navigate the potential hazards posed by the swelling rivers.
