Heatwave Forces Extended Summer Break in Pakistan’s Sindh and Balochistan Schools

KARACHI/QUETTA: Pakistan’s Sindh and Balochistan provinces have extended summer vacations in schools due to the intense heatwave gripping the regions.

In Sindh, summer holidays have been extended by two weeks, with education officials citing concerns for children’s well-being amidst frequent power cuts and temperatures soaring above 50°C (122°F).

Similarly, the Balochistan government has extended summer vacations in all public and private schools from August 1 to August 15, 2024, due to the heatwave.

The move comes as Pakistan struggles with extreme weather conditions, including heatwaves and monsoons, exacerbated by climate change. The country has experienced severe weather-related disasters in recent years, despite contributing less than 1% to global greenhouse gas emissions.
