Islamabad and Rawalpindi experienced continued heavy showers on Monday, prompting emergency measures as water levels in key drains and nullahs surged. The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) has responded by deploying teams and machinery to manage the situation and prevent flooding.
According to Wasa officials, Islamabad recorded 40 millimeters of rain in Saidpur and 66 millimeters in Golra. Meanwhile, Rawalpindi witnessed significant rainfall, with 25mm at Shamsabad, 35mm at Pirwadhai, and a heavy 60mm in New Katarian.
Water levels in Nullah Lai and other drainage channels remain a major concern. At Katarian, Nullah Lai’s water level rose to 13 feet, while at Gawalmandi it reached 4 feet, escalating the risk of overflow in surrounding areas.
Saleem Ashraf, Managing Director of Wasa, declared a rain emergency and assured the public that all necessary resources and personnel are active on the ground to address any emergencies. “Our teams are continuously monitoring water levels and are ready to respond swiftly to protect residents from possible flooding,” he emphasized.
Residents are advised to stay cautious, avoid flood-prone zones, and report any drainage blockages immediately. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more scattered heavy rains in the coming days, which could further impact these urban areas.
Authorities remain vigilant as the twin cities brace for possible flooding amid intense monsoon rains, highlighting the critical need for effective urban water management.
