Islamabad’s Air Quality Declines to Hazardous Levels Amid Construction and Emissions

Residents of Islamabad are facing significant air quality challenges, as highlighted by the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA). Over the past two months, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has fluctuated between “unhealthy” and “very unhealthy” levels, primarily due to increased construction activities, vehicular emissions, and pollution from brick kilns.

As of December 30, 2024, the AQI for Islamabad was reported at 144, categorized as “poor”.

Recent data indicates that particulate matter (PM2.5) levels reached 114 µg/m³, significantly exceeding the permissible limit of 35 µg/m³ set by national standards.

Dr. Zaigham Abbas from Pak-EPA pointed out several key contributors to the deteriorating air quality:

  • Construction Projects: Ongoing large-scale developments, particularly high-rise constructions in areas like Blue Area and Park Road, are major sources of dust and emissions. Heavy machinery such as dumper trucks and excavators operate continuously without adequate pollution control measures.
  • Vehicular Emissions: The increase in traffic and older vehicles contributes substantially to air pollution levels.
  • Brick Kilns: Outdated brick kilns on the outskirts of Islamabad have not adopted environmentally friendly technologies, further exacerbating air quality issues.

The poor air quality poses serious health risks, especially for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions like asthma. Residents have reported health issues linked to air pollution, including respiratory problems and allergies/

Dr. Rubia Usman emphasized that polluted air can affect various body systems beyond just the lungs, leading to fatigue and worsening chronic conditions.

Pak-EPA has recommended measures such as frequent water sprinkling at construction sites to mitigate dust emissions. Additionally, plans are underway to install air monitoring units across the city to better track pollution levels.

Overall, residents of Islamabad are urged to take precautions when outdoors, particularly during periods of high pollution.
