Lahore Smog Crisis Deepens Despite Government Efforts

Lahore continues to grapple with hazardous smog levels as the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) remains in the “unhealthy” range despite government claims of progress.

Recent data shows Lahore’s AQI averaging around 170 on October 1, with pollution peaks during morning and evening rush hours largely due to traffic congestion and low wind speeds limiting pollutant dispersal.

In response, Punjab’s Environmental Protection Department has launched a province-wide anti-smog operation implementing Plans A, B, and C, which include strict crackdown on crop residue burning, vehicular emission controls, and industrial pollution regulations.

A notable step this year includes the deployment of locally manufactured anti-smog guns designed to spray fine water droplets to cleanse the air, marking the first use of such modern technology in Punjab’s history.

Fifteen anti-smog guns have been put into operation starting October 2, with more units under preparation. The government has also introduced an advanced air quality monitoring and forecasting system integrated with AI and international platforms to provide real-time pollution updates and health advisories to citizens.

Despite these measures, environmental experts remain skeptical about short-term impacts, emphasizing the need for long-term sustainable solutions such as electric public transport, green energy policies, and regional cooperation with neighboring countries to address Lahore’s chronic smog crisis permanently. Meanwhile, health professionals warn that smog-related respiratory illnesses are on the rise, particularly impacting children and the elderly.

The government urges public cooperation during smog episodes, advising vulnerable groups to minimize outdoor exposure. As Lahore ranks among the world’s most polluted cities, urgent, sustained action is critical to protect public health and restore air quality.
