Major Traffic Disruptions in Punjab as Dense Fog Forces Closure of Key Motorways

Dense fog has caused significant traffic disruptions across Punjab, leading to the temporary closure of several key motorway sections. As of January 13, 2025, the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) reported that visibility in affected areas has dropped to dangerously low levels, prompting these safety measures.

Key Motorway Closures

  • M1: Closed from Kala Shah Kaku to Kot Momin Interchange and from Kot Momin Interchange to Salam Interchange.
  • M2: Closed from Kala Shah Kaku to Kot Sarwar Interchange.
  • M3: Closed from Abdul Hakeem Interchange to Darkhana.
  • Additional closures include sections of the M4 and M5 motorways due to similar visibility issues

Authorities have urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly during early morning and late evening hours when fog is most dense. Travelers are advised to use fog lights, maintain safe distances, and drive cautiously. The NHMP has implemented awareness campaigns to encourage safe driving practices in these hazardous conditions.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has indicated that cold and dry weather will persist across most regions, with forecasts suggesting continued fog and smog in Punjab and upper Sindh. Light rain and snowfall are also expected in some areas, further complicating travel conditions.
