An updated version of the SunSmart Global UV App has been released today, coinciding with the peak of the northern hemisphere summer. The app, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), World Meteorological Organization (WMO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and International Labour Organization (ILO), helps users protect themselves against harmful ultraviolet rays and reduce the risk of skin cancer and UV-related eye damage.
The app provides five-day UV and weather forecasts for searchable locations and is available in multiple languages. It also allows users to track UV levels and receive personalized sun protection advice for up to 10 locations.
According to Dr Maria Neira, Director of the Department of Climate Change, Environment and Health at WHO, “Protecting yourself from UV radiation is not just about preventing sunburn; it’s about safeguarding your future health.”
The app is based on the UV Index, which measures the level of solar UV radiation at the earth’s surface. It provides consistent UV reporting and public health messaging globally, educating users on simple prevention measures such as limiting time in the midday sun, seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and using broad-spectrum sunscreen.
The app’s release aims to bring worldwide consistency to UV reporting and public health messaging and is part of a broader campaign to inform people of the health risks of excessive heat and sun exposure.
