Pakistan and Kazakhstan Team Up to Build Climate Resilience in Central Asia

Islamabad, August 1, 2024 — In a strategic move aimed at addressing the escalating impacts of climate change in Central Asia, Pakistan and Kazakhstan have announced a new collaborative effort to bolster climate resilience across the region. The partnership, formalized through recent bilateral discussions, marks a significant step toward improving environmental sustainability and adaptive strategies in one of the world’s most climate-sensitive areas.

An agreement was reached during a meeting held here on Thursday between Romina Khurshid Alam, coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change and a Kazakhstan embassy delegation led by Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yerzhan Kistafin, a news release said.

The agreement was finalized during high-level meetings between officials from both countries, where they outlined a series of joint initiatives and projects designed to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. The collaboration will focus on several key areas, including sustainable water management, agricultural innovation, and disaster risk reduction.

The Pakistan-Kazakhstan collaboration is expected to serve as a model for other countries in the region, showcasing the potential of international cooperation in tackling global environmental challenges. Both nations have outlined a roadmap for the implementation of their joint projects and will regularly review progress to ensure the effectiveness and impact of their initiatives.

As climate change continues to pose a significant threat to global ecosystems and economies, partnerships like the one between Pakistan and Kazakhstan are crucial for driving meaningful progress and ensuring a resilient future for Central Asia.

The PM’s climate aide Romina Khurshid Alam thanked Kazakhstan’s ambassador for extending his country’s offer to engagement with the ministry for building up collaboration in climate change, energy, agriculture, water and eco-tourism sectors.
