Pakistan Declares Agricultural and Climate Emergency Amid Devastating Floods

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially announced the imposition of a nationwide agricultural and climate emergency in Pakistan on Wednesday, citing the devastating impact of recent floods.

Chairing the federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad today, PM said a committee headed by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal is also being constituted to deal with the situation arising out of floods.

He highlighted the immense human and financial losses, including the loss of about 1,000 lives, thousands rendered homeless, and vast areas of cultivable land submerged.

The prime minister emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy and roadmap to address the challenges posed by climate change, acknowledging that these issues could not be resolved overnight.

He also mentioned the ongoing assessment of damages to key crops like wheat and cotton and underscored the continuation of flood risks, particularly as floodwaters moved towards Sindh province.

The federal and provincial governments were directed to contribute towards compensating the losses and supporting recovery efforts.
