Pakistan Ratifies Middle East Green Initiative to Restore 200M Hectares, Plant 50B Trees

ISLAMABAD, January 30, 2025: The federal cabinet of Pakistan, chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, ratified the charter of the Middle East Green Initiative.

This initiative aims to restore 200 million hectares of degraded land and plant 50 billion trees across member countries, contributing significantly to environmental restoration efforts in the region.

The charter is part of a broader strategy to mitigate climate change impacts and enhance regional cooperation on environmental issues. It is expected to help reduce global carbon levels by approximately 2.5%.

The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts in Pakistan to address climate challenges and promote sustainable development through various environmental programs.

The federal cabinet meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister House, a PM Office news release said.

During the meeting, the officials of the Ministry of Climate Change informed the forum that Pakistan was among the founding members of the Charter and therefore the Ministry had recommended the forum to accord its approval.
