Rare Whale Shark Sighted Near Karachi’s Charna Island

A rare and endangered whale shark was spotted near Charna Island, Karachi, during a diving trip by members of the Pakistan Boat Rally and Fishing Association (PBRFA).

As reported, a rare endangered whale shark was spotted by PBRFA member Manan Sheikh at Charna Island on Aug 17, 2024.

The majestic creature, locally known as Andhi Mangar in Sindhi, was filmed swimming alongside divers for about 20 minutes.

This sighting highlights the rich marine biodiversity of Pakistan’s coastal waters, especially during periods when nutrient-rich waters attract such species.

The PBRFA hailed this event as a celebration of Pakistan’s natural heritage.

The global population of whale sharks has decreased by more than 50 per cent over the past 75 years due to a number of threats, including fishing, tourism and marine pollution, such as plastics and oil, finning, and climate change.

The whale shark is found along Pakistan’s coastal line, and is called Andhi Mangar in Sindhi and Baraan in Balochi.
