Sindh University Initiates Miyawaki Forest with 10,000 Saplings in Jamshoro

The University of Sindh has launched a Miyawaki forest project spanning 4,000 square yards at the Hyder Bux Pavilion in Jamshoro district. The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), aims to plant 10,000 saplings. On the first day of the campaign, 700 saplings were planted.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalil-Ur-Rehman Khoumbhati inaugurated the project, highlighting that trees at least six feet tall with a survival rate exceeding 90% are being planted. He expressed optimism that the forest would enhance the university’s landscape and contribute to environmental improvement.

Professor Dr. Rabia Memon, Director of the Institute of Plant Sciences, explained that the Miyawaki technique accelerates tree growth by tenfold and increases density by thirtyfold, making the forest self-sustaining within a few years. The project includes diverse tree species such as neem, sukhchain, terminalia, gulmohar, moringa, China rose, euphorbia, and ziziphus.
