Pakistan’s mangrove carbon credits project, the world’s largest of its kind, is expected to receive an additional USD 20 million in carbon credit trading this year, raising the total to USD 60 million, official told Climate Inn.
According to Verra, a leading standard for certifying carbon credits to offset emissions, Delta Blue Carbon 1 is the world’s largest blue carbon project which is spread across 350,000 hectares at the Indus River Delta in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province.
“So far, USD 40 million worth of trading has been completed through the Delta Blue Carbon-I project, and an additional USD 20 million is expected this year,” Riaz Ahmed Wagan, Chief Conservator of Forests, Riverine & Inland Forests at Sindh Forest Department told Climate Inn.
According to Wagan, size of Delta Blue Carbon-I is equal to around Karachi.
As per official, there are two projects under the Delta Blue Carbon initiative — Delta Blue Carbon-I and Delta Blue Carbon-II.
Wagan added that Delta Blue Carbon-I is a Verra-validated project under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), while Delta Blue Carbon-II is currently in the process of validation.
The project is expected to remove around 142 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent from the atmosphere over its lifetime.
Wagan added that an incentive program for local communities is also part of the Delta Blue Carbon initiative, focusing on health, education, and livelihood improvement.
